The Koch Family: Earth's Harvest CSA
SEE "HOW TO EDIT" AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS PAGE. If you need help in adding your farm or comments: CALL JENNIE 607 432-2038, I'll help you through the process.
This year, sink your family's TAX REBATE into a CSA with your local farmer.
Site visits: If you are going to visit a farm this spring and you would like to go with someone else, take me along, I'll photograph the farm and put it on the Wiki. On the weekend after May 20th I'll be visiting Woodscape: Farm Theresa May-O'Brien on Gifford Hill Road in Oneonta. 433-7615 raises lambs for lambs wool.
Find your farm and add comments, or add your farm here. Do you drive past any of these farms? Maybe they need some help, maybe you could use some great food.
Help that people can offer: physical work, transportation of people/goods, talking up your farmer to your neighbors, introducing kids to work on the farm. Although we have made an effort to note those farmers who are certified organic, we are beginning to understand that becoming certified MUST be made easier.
Farmers, when you add comments about your farm, include not only what food you offer, but also:
. What types of labor do I need: volunteer and paid, skilled and unskilled?
. When are some busy times when I could use many unskilled hands?
. Am I interested in having young people learn at my farm?
. What kind of support do I need in order to make the best use of semi-skilled workers?
Do you know about "Woofing"?
http://www.wwoof.org/
WWOOF is an international movement that helps people exchange - in return for volunteer help WWOOF hosts offer food, accommodation and opportunities to learn about organic lifestyles. WWOOF organisations link individuals wanting to volunteer on organic farms or smallholdings with people who are looking for volunteer help. (More at bottom of page).

Paul says that if you are a vegetarian it might feed you for a week... of course grains are not part of it... because of the solar greenhouses they do have early peppers and tomatos. I asked Paul about getting extras of some things to can and put away, yes, last year they did have extra tomatos, onions, garlic and potatos. This is an important point to me because I want to start my root cellar this summer and my passive cool air "refrigerator" in my kitchen. However, extras are as they happen.

CSA for going on 8 Years! Lucky Dog Farm in Hamden, NY is owned and operated by Richard and Holley Giles. Our CSA has been in operation since 2001. In addition to our CSA program, Lucky Dog Farm sells retail at three farmer’s markets in central NY state and wholesale both locally and in New York City. Our goal is to provide high-quality, nutritious, organic produce for our community immediate community and our downstate neighbors.
CSA is a relationship of mutual support and commitment between a local farm and community members. Members pay a seasonal fee to receive a weekly supply of fresh organic produce, which varies in content according to the season.
How does it work? Each week from the beginning of June till the end of October you will receive 7 - 10 seasonal vegetables and/or herbs from our gardens. We pick the produce the same day you get it, so it’s super fresh. You can also receive fresh cut flower bouquets in your share for an additional charge. Members come to The Lucky Dog Farm Store in Hamden each Thursday between 4 and 6pm to pick up their produce. If you can’t pick up at that time, we’ll hold your share for a Friday or Saturday pickup.
By becoming a CSA member, you will receive a fresher product at a lower price. And because we use no pesticides, chemical fertilizers, or genetically modified seed, you can feel secure in the knowledge you’re eating safe, honest, food.
Members will: Enjoy a variety of fresh, organic produce and flowers at a great prices including many items unavailable at local supermarkets. Help reduce packaging and distribution wastes that ultimately expend the Earth’s resources and end up as pollution.

mvargha@wpe.com This is a cooperative CSA made up of a group of farmers, lead by different farms over the years with strong input from members. The Ainslie's farm ran the CSA for a few years, then Eric Forester's farm took over. Right now, we are the main provider. We get some things from other farmers, to provide variety and stability. We do encourage working members who can assist. Current membership is 30 families. The 20 week season begins first week of June, continues to mid/late October. Membership fee $320 for the vegetable season. Suggested DEADLINE for joining is May 1st, but can take members later, can do lump sums or can take divided payments and can take work as credit. When we get an abundance of food, can donate to a local shelter. As a group we order apples to take to our local apple press. This apple press is right here in Westford, they do not pasteurize.
We use a hoophouse to extend our growing season. We are certified organic through Naturally Grown
http://www.naturallygrown.org/
a non-profit alternative certification program tailored for small-scale, direct-market farmers using natural methods.
We hope that members will become so active in the CSA that the membership will make more decisions. There will be a CSA get together this summer. One member is putting recipes up on Yahoo on a group that is formed there.

Wild Acorn Farm has grown slowly from the desire to provide our family with the best possible food. As an additional benefit, our activities allow us to provide naturally raised, piglets, pork, eggs and some seasonal produce to a limited number of our neighbors. Our pigs and chickens are raised with NO antibiotics, growth hormones or animal by-producrts. We believe transporting our animals prier to slaughter causes undue stress and so our pigs are slaughtered on farm as humanely as possible. We use a small custom butcher guaranteeing personal attention. Each share is equivalent to 1/2 a pig, grown over an 8 month period. The price includes price of piglet, growing, slaughtering, butchering and smoking. The meat is cut and wrapped to share holders specifications. There is no requirement to work at the farm but visitors are welcome and may be put to work!

Local Food Stores
It was SO full of people on a summer Saturday
Good Cheap Food Good Cheap Food
53 Main Street
Delhi, New York 13753-
Phone:(607) 746-6562 FAX: (607) 746-3112
The store was originally a buying club. When we moved here, we were very strict vegetarians and didn't have any money. The only place that you could buy grains and stuff was at Deer Valley in Oneonta, which was a very expensive traditional health food store. We brought the food we wanted into the area.
For many years, it was at my house; then people wanted to be able to order more than every three months, and in the summers, I had a summer kitchen. It was very primitive, but very pleasant. We moved into the basement of a church in town for a couple of years, and then we finally moved into this building. We started the buying club ... around 1977, and moved into town around 1979. And then five years ago we re-incorporated and disbanded the co-op because there wasn't enough of a membership to maintain it. So we re-incorporated and now it's a sole ownership. But the business has been around in one form or another since 1977.
The name with Good Cheap Food came from a philosophical point of view. We've tried to maintain ... a margin that allows people to buy whole foods at reasonable prices, but in addition to the normal whole food (products), we have a full range of products; we now have more things that are gourmet or specialty food items.
We try to support organic as much as we can, but we're also into local. So, for example, we have someone who grows this gorgeous lettuce, and it's not organic, but it's grown hydroponically and it's not sprayed (with pesticides). We sell a lot of local meat and cheeses _ I'd say that in the whole area, we probably have the largest variety of locally produced stuff. So that's something we're really proud of. It's really great to see what's happening with the cheeses. New York state is really coming into its own with the artisanal cheeses.
Another thing we have here is herbs and spices in bulk, so people can buy a pinch of that or a pinch of this. We sell fun silly toys for kids and other gift items, and we sell stationary and some books _ remainders and secondhand books. Its a community gathering place now...with people, talking about what's going on in the store, what's going on in the community, food-related events. It's nice to have that connection.

Pie In The Sky Barn
Janet, daughter Sadie and John Carter Owners: Janet, Jamie and John
3883 Rt 7, Rd 2 Box 269A, Otego 13825 DIRECTIONS: Heading WEST from Oneonta down Route 7 toward Otego: 4 miles down on your right is Pie in the Sky.
INTERVIEW with Janet 6/20/08: The farm store began as a dream shared by 2 couples - the unattainable "pie in the sky": what would we all do if we had the choice? Come back to Oneonta and start this business. We started as a Farmer's Market in 1981, built this Barn and it evolved into this community gathering place that you see now, where you can come to play chess, carve pumpkins - quilt or buy a quilt -and hang out. HOME MADE POLAR BEAR ICE CREAM helped us bridge the gap as, over the years, we saw that people were losing their SENSE OF SEASON. By diversifying with the ice cream we could continue in business despite competition from California fruits and avocados from Chile. We have developed strong relationships with excellent local bakers who keep us stocked with PIES, CAKES, COOKIES and baked goods. I'm the ICE CREAM maker, you can order ice cream freshly made, just give me a few days to prepare and allow it to freeze up. All the usual flavors, and then maybe ginger, or ginseng, or cardimom for the adventurous. BEE OBSERVATORY: our McCoy bees are healthier this year than last. STRAWBERRIES: our Juneberries are in right now, and we have everbearing too. PUMPKINS: These are Jamie's babies, he can wax poetic on pumpkins and we grow a lot of them. John Carter grows a lot of TOMATOS (" Last year I canned these, they were the best tomatos around for canning and the best price" - Jennie). CHRISTMAS TREES grown right here.
EVENTS: PANCAKE BREAKFASTS breakfasts alternating Sundays from 8am to 12noon: June 29th, July 13th, 27th, August 10th, 24th, Sept 7th, 21st, October 19th, Nov 2nd, 16th. PUMPKIN CARVING PARTY October 22nd from 6pm to 9pm. CIDER PRESS. CLOSED TUESDAYS. Telephone: 607/432-3599

"The Hellers from Market Farms in Bainbridge offered great food throughout the season. I always bought from them, and found the quality of their food very high and always fresh." -Andy
Yes, The Heller family from Bainbridge has the best corn. Although I couldn't find them on the Northeastern Organic Farmers Association website, they make excellent food. Great farmers don't always bother to become certified organic. I wonder why that is? - Jennie
"According to some of the farmers at the SpeakOut on 2/16/08 the reason they won't become certified organic is the amount of effort involved in doing so. Not being certified organic doesn't neccessarily mean lower quality." - Todd Evans

A family run farm selecting for flavor from a large variety of fruits and vegetables. All produce and flowers are fresh everyday between Memorial Day and Thanksgiving. Known for our delicious tomatoes. Look for us at the following Farmer's Markets: Oneonta, Liberty, Callicoon, Delhi, Roscoe, Jeffersonville and Patakan near Margaretville.
"We served the Heller's salad greens and corn at the Alert Bates event in October. The greens were delicious and the corn was the best we've had in a long time. I got a 2 extra bushels of corn and froze them for the winter." -Colleen

At our farm, we produce certified naturally grown lamb, beef and pork. Also eggs and vegetables when is season. Our animals have access to the outdoors year round. Our cattle, (Scottish highlanders, heritage breed) and sheep are grass fed, they have acres of pasture and fresh water and air. We never give them antibiotics or hormones. They live a natural life according to their natures. Our pigs and chickens are also pasture raised and supplemented with sprouted organic grains. Our goal is to became certified biodynamic and we are working towards it. We don't use any chemicals, pesticides or fertilizers, only compost made with the biodynamic preparations. (WHAT IS BIODYNAMIC? CHECK OUT THIS WEBSITE:
http://www.biodynamics.com/node/111 )Our motto is Happy animals, healthy meat.
"Dave and Sonia are very particular about how they raise their animals and everything they feed them. The taste of their meadow raised meats is truly wonderful. My children are kind of picky about what they will eat but my whole family loves to eat Nectar Hills Farm meats."
-Colleen
"Visiting Sonia's store in Cherry Valley was really fun, you can BARELY tell that there is food for sale, since most of the shop is features wares from all over the world. Sonia began to explain to me the difference between biodynamic and permaculture, both fascinating approaches to growing food...she is like a beautiful library, fun to talk to...and her food is great. She uses 2 slaughterhouses: Steiner's in Otego and another one that is about 1.5 hours from here...."

"They have a FARMSTAND, sell wholesale direct to restaurants and go to farmers' markets. I just ate a couple of their organic, pastured hen eggs, supplemented with organic grains...delicious. They are certified by NOFA (Northeastern Organic Farmers) I did double check NOFA's listing, and USDA Organic. We bought the eggs at Annie's Bread and Butter." - Jennie
